About Rajasthan State Biodiversity Board (RSBB)
The Rajasthan State Biodiversity Board (RSBB) was established in 2004 under the Biological Diversity Act of 2002. The main objective of the board is to conserve the biological diversity of the state and promote its sustainable use. The RSBB is responsible for implementing the provisions of the Biological Diversity Act in Rajasthan and ensuring that the state’s biodiversity is protected and managed effectively.
The RSBB works towards achieving its objectives by creating awareness among the public and various stakeholders about the importance of biodiversity conservation. The board also carries out research and documentation of the state’s biodiversity and monitors the impact of human activities on the environment. In addition, the RSBB facilitates the development of biodiversity management plans and provides technical support to government agencies and other stakeholders.
One of the key functions of the RSBB is to establish Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs) at the local level. The BMCs are responsible for preparing People’s Biodiversity Registers (PBRs) that document the biodiversity of their respective areas. The PBRs provide information on the various species of plants, animals, and microorganisms found in the area, as well as the traditional knowledge associated with their use and management. The PBRs also serve as a valuable resource for decision-making on biodiversity conservation and management.
The RSBB also plays a crucial role in regulating access to biological resources and associated traditional knowledge. The board issues permits for the collection of biological resources for research and commercial purposes and ensures that the access and utilization of these resources are carried out in a sustainable and equitable manner.
The RSBB is headed by a Chairman and has a full-time Member Secretary and other members representing various sectors such as agriculture, forestry, environment, and biodiversity conservation. The board is also supported by a team of technical and administrative staff.
