About BRDC

The Bio Resources Development Centre (BRDC) is a registered institution under the Meghalaya Society Registration Act XII of 1983, operating under the Department of Planning, Government of Meghalaya. Established in 2003, BRDC’s registered office is situated at 5 ½ Mile, Upper Shillong. The center’s mandate is to harness biotechnological opportunities and adapt such technologies into valuable knowledge resources. The goal is to conserve and sustainably utilize biological resources to promote multiple livelihoods and support the local green economy.

As an R&D institution, BRDC focuses on promoting sustainable green technologies to farming communities through training and capacity building across the state of Meghalaya. The center also works towards advancing indigenous systems of medicine by adding value to herbal medicines, documenting traditional knowledge and practices in the state. Additionally, BRDC is actively involved in the conservation of indigenous orchids, horticultural and agricultural crops through tissue culture techniques.

Other key programs include research and development for the production of biofertilizers to ensure the availability of bio-inputs for various agricultural and horticultural crops. BRDC is also engaged in a seed-saving initiative for food security, emphasizing the preservation of indigenous, local, and heirloom seeds. These programs and initiatives have had transformative impacts on various stakeholders in the state, contributing to sustainable agricultural practices and biodiversity conservation.
