A separate Tribal Development Department was established on April 22, 1983 and since 1984 the Tribal Development Department has been functioning independently. Directorate of Tribal Development was merged with Tribal Development Commissionerate in 1992 to strengthen Tribal Development Department.
Under the Tribal Development Department, there are four Additional Commissioners and 30 Integrated Tribal Development Project Offices at Thane, Nashik, Amravati and Nagpur through which the state and central government schemes for backward class welfare are implemented. Under this scheme social welfare, economic welfare, progress in education, social justice, women and child development, health, nutrition, employment etc. Plans are implemented. In the budget for the year 2023-24, for Tribal Development Department Rs. 12655.00 Crores outlay is sanctioned.
