Exam Pattern Ministry of Defence Tradesman Mate, JOA, MA, Fireman
The examination for the ministry of defence will be conducted in two stages.
- Physical/Skill Test
- Written Test
Candidates have to qualify in both stages to move further in the selection process.
Physical/Skill Test
Physical endurance tests or skill tests will vary based on the categories. We have outlined and explained post-wise physical/skill requirements in the following table.

JOA | Skill Test: 35 WPM typing speed in English on computer or 30 WPS typing speed in Hindi on computer. Qualifying in nature only. |
Tradesman Mate | Candidates aiming for the Tradesman Mate post have to go through the below tests: (i) Running: 1.6 Km in 6 minutes 30 seconds. (ii) Carrying a weight of 50 kgs to a distance of 200 meters in 100 seconds. |
Fireman (Male only) | Candidates need to be prepared for the following endurance tests: (i) Running: 1.6 Km in 6 minutes and 30 seconds. (ii) Clearing 2.7-meter wide ditch and landing on both feet. (iii) Carrying a man (Fireman lift) of 63.5 Kgs to a distance of 183 meters within 96 seconds. (iv) Climbing 3 meters vertical rope using hands and feet. |
Notes:
- Timing for physical endurance or skill tests for female candidates will be subject to the authority’s decision.
- Physically handicapped candidates will be given relaxation in the endurance tests.
Written Test
Candidates who qualify for the physical/skill tests will have to take the written test as the next step of the selection procedure. In the written test, the subject-wise distribution of questions and marks will be as per the following table:

As shown in the above table it’s clear that the total no of questions in the written test will be 150 for a total of 150 marks (1 mark for each question). Take a look at a few important notes:
- Question paper will be completely objective type.
- Candidates will have 2.5 hours to attempt all 150 questions.
- There will be a negative marking of 0.25 for every wrong answer given.
Apart from that, the difficulty level of the question paper will vary based on the categories/post. The standard of the question paper will be according to the following bullet points:
- MA written test will be of graduation standard basis.
- JOA written test will be 12th standard basis.
- Tradesman Mate and Fireman written test will be of 10th standard basis.

A merit list will be prepared based on the combined marks scored in physical/skill tests and written tests.
The required educational qualification for MA, JOA, Tradesman Mates, and Fireman is Graduation, 12th, 10th, and 10th respectively.
